On June 16, 1997, a severe band of thunderstorms swept over the Great
Plains. Meteorologists at the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms
at the University of Oklahoma predicted the evolution of these storms by
incorporating data from several sources including Doppler radar into their
storm prediction model. The data from their forecasts were used by NCSA's
David Bock to generate the image seen on the cover. Ice, snow, and cloud
moisture variables are combined and rendered as volumetric clouds with
values increasing from deep purple to blue to pink to white. Rain is represented
by the teal isosurface. |
