Snow Depth in Inches

This surface meteorological chart shows the surface snow cover over the continental United States and is updated daily at 1200Z. This map is only available during the cold season. The snow depth at the surface is given in inches.

Snow depth is only reported at the location of the surface stations once every 24 hours at 1200Z. It may not be representative of the current regional conditions during snow storms and blizzards, when local amounts can increase rapidly. During the spring, warm temperatures can cause rapid melting of the snow, which can also lead to current snow depth being quite different from the reported 1200Z depth. In the mountains, where there are few surface observing stations, the snow cover tends to be more persistent and its depth significantly greater than in the lower regions.
